Tourism project gets to the point

Jessica Benton
THE REGION’S tourism boss has welcomed plans to turn Lake Connewarre’s Taits Point into a tourist attraction.
Geelong Otway Tourism executive director Roger Grant said Parks Victoria’s plan to develop access and visitor facilities at the Lake Connewarre game reserve between Geelong and Barwon Heads would make the area a tourist drawcard.
“We very much welcome this initiative,” he said.
“Nature-based tourism is one of the key strengths for our region and any opportunity to increase access to the natural environment in a responsible way is a very good thing.
“Natural environments such as wetlands are popular to visitors because of birdlife and vegetation and this allows people to stop and spend some time in the area.”
Parks Victoria has proposed works including improved car parking and viewing decks, walking tracks and improved access to Lake Connewarre.
The upgrade would also include supplying visitors with information about natural features and the area’s “cultural history”.
Parks Victoria’s Andrew McKinnon said the upgrade would capitalise on the site’s underdeveloped assets.
“We want to provide upgraded and expanded facilities that will encourage more people to come and enjoy this significant area and we urge interested people to comment on the concept plans.”
Mr McKinnon said residents could comment on the proposed plans until February 15 with forms available at www.parkweb.vic.gov.au.
