LIFE on the road has taught young musician Kyle Taylor that regional audiences are better than their city counterparts.
The former Geelong resident said felt “at home” whenever he visited the city on one of his tours.
“Playing in regional places is something I really enjoy,” Taylor admitted.
He recalled gaining notoriety as a teenager in band Lost Order with friends at St Joseph’s College but never took his early taste of local “fame” seriously.
“I first started playing at 16 and [our band] did well in the music scene in Geelong but back then we just jumped around and acted like idiots and didn’t understand the business.”
“We got the girls but it was a shock when we got out of school.”
Taylor said had had to work harder on his solo ventur without the parental support he enjoyed in high school.
“I had to learn things for myself after high school.”
The stress of booking gigs and self-promotion forced Taylor to take time out of touring last year but he assured the Independent he now had “head around things”.
“It was very character-building and I’m ready to be serious about my career.”
Taylor said progressing his music from “pop-centred” tunes to “Mumford-and-Sons-like folk” was part of his musical transition.
“I think my music has a more raw sound now.
“The lyrics are still about relationships and lovey-dovey stuff, though.”
Taylor will play gigs between January and February in Geelong and on the Bellarine Peninsula.
