Geelong’s council will start warning vulnerable residents about heatwave threats to their health this summer, according to Mayor John Mitchell.
He said City Hall had adopted a threshold “mean” temperature of 28C forecast over consecutive days as a trigger to sounding the alarm with “direct contact” and “key messages” in local media.
The mean temperature will be calculated by adding the forecast maximum of one day to the minimum for the next and dividing by the amount of days.
City Hall adopted the system after authorities blamed heatwaves for 374 deaths in Victoria last summer.
