JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
REG Fisher was a familiar face around central Geelong as membership officer for the city’s chamber of commerce and business mentor for charity organisation United Way.
Mr Fisher died suddenly last week, aged 78.
The popular Reg knew everyone and everyone knew Reg, according to long-time colleague and former chamber executive officer Lawrie Miller.
He was perhaps the only person in Geelong who could pop his head into any office or boardroom unannounced and still be greeted with “Hello, Reg,” Mr Miller said.
Few knew he also played five games of VFL football – four for Richmond in 1953 and one for Geelong in 1957.
Mr Fisher was also a triple premiership player with Williamstown in the VFA.
A former teacher, he was a long-serving regional director for the Education Department. He received a bicentenary medal for service to education.
Mr Fisher was a president of the former Geelong Golf Club.
He also helped to organise many of the Independent’s charity golf days for North Geelong’s McKellar Centre
Mr Fisher’s wife of 53 years, Joan, died late last year.
He is survived by two sons and four grandchildren.
