Latest accolade for young achiever

By LUKE VOOGT

Geelong teenager Sarah Kenworthy won yet another accolade for her volunteer work in Uganda at the Victorian Young Achiever Awards this month.
Sarah received the CFA Young Volunteer Excellence Award in front of 500 guests at an awards ceremony at Atlantic Group, Docklands, on 6 May.
“I was very honoured and humbled,” she said.
“It was just amazing to see the work the other finalists had done.”
Sarah, 19, volunteered for six weeks in a health centre in a remote village in Mannya, Uganda, last year.
The then 17-year-old delivered babies, resuscitated a newborn and assisted in a HIV clinic with her sister Jessie-Anne.
During the trip, she spent three days living with Ugandan family who had no electricity or running water.
“It was a bit shocking to see the way they lived,” she said.
The Geelong teenager created the ‘Light up Mannya Campaign’, raising over $14,000 for 1400 solar lights for the Ugandan village.
She’s aiming to raise $15,000 for a new pallet of 1728 solar lights and hopes to again travel to Mannya this year.
Sarah is an active volunteer in the Christ Church meal program, providing breakfast for the homeless and disadvantaged.
She has raised money for East Timor and organised the ‘Make a Difference’ campaign at Sacred Heart College, to raise funds for local causes.
