Thug threw dim sims during ‘cowardly’ assault on student

KIM WATERS
A man threw dim sims at a university student before punching him unconscious in a “cowardly attack” at a service station, a Geelong court has heard.
Korey Caddy, 21, of Geelong, pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates Court to recklessly causing injury in the assault at an APCO service station on March 3 last year.
Leading Senior Constable Glenn Abbott aid Caddy “taunted and teased” the victim before throwing the dim sims and chasing him out of the building.
Sen Const Abbott said Caddy punched the victim in the face and fled the scene.
The victim was “knocked unconscious” and suffered a split lip and grazes on a cheek and the back of his head.
Sen Const Abbott said Caddy told police the victim was “a smart a..e”.
Caddy’s lawyer, Wendy Gibbons, said the incident was “not quite as simple as an unprovoked assault”.
Ms Gibbons said her client was involved in a “verbal clash” with the victim but admitted he responded “disproportionately”.
“He’s very aware of what he risks today,” she told the court.
Magistrate Stephen Myall described the attack as “cowardly”.
A “verbal exchange” was “no justification for recklessly causing injury”, Mr Myall said.
“This is, in affect, gratuitous violence towards another citizen. But for your plea of guilty I may well have considered an immediate term of imprisonment.”
Mr Myall convicted and fined Caddy $1000.
