NAMES for Barwon Heads’ new bridges will be revealed in a special ceremony on Sunday, according to Vicroads.
Regional director Robin Miles said Barwon Heads Primary School’s captains would announce the names.
“The names were submitted by the community during last year’s Vicroads Barwon Heads Bridge naming competition,” she said.
The timing of the official opening and naming ceremony coincided with completion of work around the bridges. The road bridge has been open since November, 2010 and the pedestrian crossing since April this year.
“The event and associated activities have been planned for and budgeted as part of the overall bridge project,” Ms Miles said.
“We’re thrilled to be officially naming the two bridges, which are such an important link between the towns of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.”
State Labor Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville said the Baillieu Government was “hypocritical” for taking credit for the bridges.
“They campaigned strongly against the bridges and it was a key campaign issue for Andrew Katos in particular. Now to be there on Sunday taking credit is just extraordinary.”
Mr Katos, Liberal Member for South Barwon, said the Government supported the bridges despite opposing them in while in opposition.
“The reality is the bridge is now operational and the community is entitled to mark the occasion with an event,” he said.
“The Barwon Heads community has had enough political wrangling over this project.”
Mr Katos said Vicroads staff would provide information and answer questions at the ceremony.
Barwon Heads’ Lahey Square rotunda will host a free sausage sizzle and entertainment for the ceremony from midday to 2pm Sunday.
