Couple married to joint training schedule for multi sport festival

ABSENCE might make the heart grow fonder but training together helps keep sporty South Geelong couple Barry and Kim McCormack “best friends”.
The former triathletes turned mountain bike riders hit the pool together this week in preparation for February’s Geelong Multi Sport Festival.
The pair swam together three or four times a week as recovery from their riding exploits, Barry said.
He admitted that friends often suggested joint training sessions could be too much of a good thing for a married couple.
“People often say that,” Barry laughed.
“We do the majority of our training together. We don’t have kids, so we’re sort of best friends.
“We do a lot of stuff together and we love it.”
Barry and Kim plan to compete in the one-kilometre bay swim at the multi sport festival from February 10 to 12.
“I don’t think we’ll be competitive given that we’re cyclists but we’ll see how we go,” Barry said.
“Maybe in our age group we’ll go all right.”
The multi sport festival will also include a fun run and short-course triathlons for individuals, teams and relay groups. The final day will host Olympic and long-course triathlons.
The Independent has signed on as naming rights sponsor for the festival’s Superkidz Triathlon, with distances tailored for children aged seven to 13.
Barry urged prospective competitors of all levels and ages to enter the multi sport festival now.
“The festival has something for everyone from novices through to elite athletes. Geelong lends itself to this sort of event.
“I say come along and enter, for sure.”
