City to upsize bins under new waste collection deal

GEELONG households will receive larger bins as part of a revised tender for council waste collection services, according to City Hall.
The City said council would progressively move from the standard 120-litre garbage bins to 140-litre models.
High-rise units, private complexes and retirement villages would have the choice of using 660-litre non-council-owned bins, the City said.
Council would also trial larger 360-litre recycling bins.
The larger recycling bins could replace existing 240-litre models when residents requested multiple receptacles for recyclable materials, the City said.
Council’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, John Doull, said a review of the service recommended changes.
The changes would ensure the kerbside collection service continued to cope with population growth in the next five years, he said.
“Our three-bin system is a way we can encourage residents to regularly recycle their waste and it has proven effective so far.
“The adopted changes will help us to continue to deliver the service efficiently as the population changes and grows.”
Cr Doull said council would advertise the tender in January, with the new service to begin in July, 2013.
