After missing out on tickets to the 2007 Falls Festival at Lorne, the boys from Sydney’s Art vs Science decided to sneak into the annual three-day event.
The following year the dance trio made the bill.
“I probably shouldn’t be telling you this, but we went through the bush and snuck in because we couldn’t get tickets,” band member Jim Finn confessed.
“It’s our favourite festival and we didn’t want to miss out.
“The next year we were playing on stage – we couldn’t believe it, it was so funny.”
Art vs Science shot to fame after winning Triple Js Unearthed competition in 2008.
Since then, the band has built up a solid fan base around the nation with the help of its impressive, deliriously infectious party anthem, Flippers.
The song is regularly played on Triple J and is also featured on a popular surfing video.
“We think this song is pretty cool – it’s a really fun song to play,” Finn revealed.
“It just seemed to take off and to be honest we didn’t think it would be that big.”
Finn praised the 2008 Unearthed competition for helping firmly cement the band on the Australian musical landscape.
“I think they’re really important, basically because there are so many bands out there and it’s really hard to get your foot in the door,” he said.
“Those competitions are a great launch pad to get exposure, otherwise it can be really daunting starting out when you’ve got a huge road ahead of you.”
Earlier this year Art vs Science released its much-anticipated follow up single Parlez-Vous Francais?
Fans welcomed the song with open arms, while critics scrutinised the lyrics.
“I’m aware that it’s not completely correct in French, there are a few conflicts with singulars and plurals,” he explained.
“We consulted someone’s mum who was a French teacher and she said it sounded ok and we thought, that’s good enough for us.”
Following a performance at this year’s Splendour in the Grass, the boys will embark on a national headline tour kicking off in Launceston later this month.
“We feel very home on stage and have so much fun,” Finn said.
“I can’t wait to hit the road.”
Art vs Science plays at the National Hotel on August 6.
