Schools miss out on $30m

Geelong schools would be short-changed almost $30 million if the Federal Government failed to commit to its promised Gonski funding, according to the state government.
State government released figures it said represented the loss of funding for each school.
Geelong’s 59 schools would lose up to $29,920,000, state government claimed.
Hardest hit would be Northern Bay P-12 College set to miss out on as much as $4.6 million.
Belmont High School and North Geelong Secondary College would each be shorted $1.5 million.
In a renewed war of numbers, education minister James Merlino said Victorian schools were losing out to the tune of $1.1 billion.
“Before the last election, the Liberals promised they wouldn’t cut education and they would honour Gonski in full,” Mr Merlino said.
“These figures show the damage that will be done to Victorian schools which will lose on average $500,000 each and every year from 2019.
“Ripping out this money hurts our schools at a time when getting a good education is more important than ever.
“It will result in fewer teachers and less support for students.”
Education and Training Minister Simon Birmingham said the Federal Government provided funding to the states and territories which then used their own funding models to distribute to specific schools.
“School funding will continue to increase from the current record levels with the Federal Government’s commitment to Victorian schools increasing by $993.7 million or 27 per cent from 2014-15 to 2018-19,” Mr Birmingham said.
“It is disingenuous of Victoria to throw too many stones in the Gonski glasshouse when they themselves are yet to commit to the $806 million additional funding required under the final two years of their agreement with the former government and given they provide less funding per student to their schools than all other states and territories.
“Will Victorian Labor commit to funding their schools from their own budget like Western Australia does or will they continue to deflect the scrutiny and attention?
“Over the four years from 2009-10 to 2013-14, Commonwealth funding per student in government schools across Victoria grew in real terms by 22.2 per cent, while the Victorian state contribution contracted by more than seven per cent.”
The list of Geelong schools by electorate with state government estimated losses is:
