TORQUAY Surf Lifesaving Club has won the junior state championships at Lorne.
Over 1600 juniors from 38 Victorian clubs competed, with Torquay finishing first over Mentone and Point Leo.
Life Saving Victoria’s Tom Mitchell said bad weather cancelled day one of competition.
But better weather on day two allowed “fantastic” junior champions to hit the water.
“The team events bring out great camaraderie between team members as well as friendly rivalry and competition between clubs,” Mitchell said.
“We saw some exciting finishes across the competition, which was certainly reflected in the close nature of the final scores.”
Torquay’s Sarah Harte won the under-14s Water Championship, while club-mate Sam Coles was second in an the under-13s.
Jan Juc’s Drew Green won an under-11 boys iron event, while fellow club member Naomi Madigan was named Nipper Parent of the Year.
The club finished fifth overall.
Competition continues this weekend when Anglesea hosts a 2012 Victorian Lifesaving Championships.
Organisers expect about 1000 athletes and 2000 spectators to attend.
The event will be the last chance for senior athletes to compete before 2012 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Gold Coast later this month.
