A 12-MONTH trial raising puppies to be guide dogs has become a long-term labour of love for Geelong’s Lyn Dodd.
She has taken her voluntary role with Guide Dogs Victoria into her retirement village after more than 15 years of working with the puppies.
Lyn and her late husband used to take their pets all over Australia on holiday adventures before becoming involved with guide dogs.
“It’s a wonderful way to have company,” she said.
“It doesn’t cost you anything and you get the reward of looking after something that’s going to make a real difference in someone’s life.”
Guide Dogs Victoria said puppy-raisers were dedicated volunteers committed to socialising puppies with visits to shopping centres and train stations.
Lyn’s student for the past five months, 18-month old black labrador Kaylee, has been living with her at St Albans Park’s Tannoch Brae retirement village.
“She’s beautiful, sweet and a bit cheeky,” Lyn said.
“I think she’s the best dog I’ve ever had.”
Lyn and Kaylee have become best mates, with the pair often around town to attend bowls tournaments or visit friends.
Kaylee will soon move to Melbourne where she will undertake intensive training with her new full-time owner.
“Among other things, she’ll get to know her new owner, where she will live and how to catch trains,” Lyn said.
Lyn expected another furry companion to arrive soon.
