Youth choir all grown up for 25th anniversary concert

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

GEELONG Youth Choir is not so young any more.
Celebrating its 25th birthday next month, the choir is looking for as many past singers as possible to re-join the group for a silver jubilee concert.
An alumni choir has been formed, with former members encouraged to join in the fun.
Eileen Martin founded the community choir in 1988 to provide local youths with an opportunity to develop a sound musical education.
Musical director Denise Hollingworth said Geelong Youth Choir had developed a reputation for excellence in choral singing and comprehensive musicianship programs.
“We aim to provide a welcoming environment where young people can extend their skills, enhance their love of music and make friends with others who have similar interests,” Ms Hollingworth said.
“There’s such a positive vibe within our choir community. Our choristers love to sing and show an obvious joy of sharing music with others.
“They’re some of the most supportive and caring young people I’ve ever met. It’s such a privilege to work with them.”
The choir sings at numerous community events and concerts, including Australia Day Family Fun Day at Rippleside Park and Masters in the Making Junior Art exhibition.
The choir runs weekly programs at Highton and Lara.
The Silver Jubilee Concert begins 3.30pm on 8 September at Kardinia Kardinia International College, with more information available at geelongyouthchoir.com.
