FINALLY FRIDAY: Stangel reborn

BATTLER: Geelong's Michael Stangel.

By CHERIE DONNELLAN

MICHAEL Stangel was an Aussie battler of the music world until he stepped onto hit reality show The Voice’s audition stage.
The Geelong singer-songwriter had earned his musical chops as a member of band Bourne, which sold one million copies of single The Guide in 2007 – and he had written songs for the likes of Shannon Noll, The Veronicas and Dean Geyer.
But, unlike Noll, he wasn’t recognised when walking down the street until he won the approval of The Voice judge Delta Goodrem for his rendition of Cold Chisel’s Bow River.
Stangel believed his fame grew further when viewers came to understand his life story, particularly his battle with cancer.
He was aware some viewers were sceptical of The Voice using contestants’ “sob stories” but thought they accepted his honesty about his condition.
“It was well-documented that I have health issues – before and after the show – but it’s not trumped up, it’s real, and I’ve found a fan base that’s real.”
Stangel said his upcoming album, set for release in November, was titled An Aussie Spirit to reflect his journey.
Fans could experience his “rebirth” as an artist at North Geelong’s Sphinx on 30 August, Stangel said.
The gig would be his first since beginning recording the album.
Stangel said his audiences could expect to a “mix of original music and iconic Aussie music”, which would also feature on the album.
“It’s going to be a full on night of music – and I’ve got a couple of special guests, too.”
Geelong bands Marco Goldsmith Band and Oh Sophia, featuring Sophia Katos, would be the support acts at the Sphinx, Stangel said.
“We’ll all put on a great show.”
In Aussie battler tradition, Stangel said he had learnt to work for his audience.
“A thing I learnt on the show is about not closing off to an audience when you’re not getting the response you want or when you’re shy and the audience struggled to connect.
“You’ve got to bring the audience in and I’m able to do that – well I hope I am – a lot better than I used to,” Stangel laughed.
