Complex application could fuel Portarlington’s future

AN application to build a service station and car wash at Portarlington has temporarily halted plans for a community-run fuel depot, according to its proponents.
A spokesperson for the fuel depot group said members would now wait to see whether council approved the application.
“I think people will be happy either way as long as there’s a fuel outlet in town,” the spokesperson said.
“If the application is approved it will save us having to come up with the funds for a community-run petrol station.”
Lascaris Designs director John Lascaris said his application included a 26-factory warehouse complex, a petrol station and a car wash on about 1.2 hectares at the corner of Tower and Queenscliff roads.
Mr Lascaris said his company was “in discussions” with petrol giants BP, Liberty and United.
“We’re waiting for the permits to be issued before we take the matter to the next level.
“The location and opportunity have come up at the same time and, after doing my research at council and with locals, it made sense to put it in that location.
“If permits are approved and all the feasibility studies and construction costs come together we could start as early as February or March next year.”
The Independent revealed earlier this year that residents were gathering support for an unmanned, self-serve station after losing their last fuel outlet when Eden’s Garage closed in 2010.
