Comedy and casseroles are an unusual combination but Geelong comedian Dave Thornton is happy to share.
Back in his hometown for a charity gig, the funnyman hopes to have his audience “joking” on their casseroles as funds are raised for Barwon Health Foundation’s Giving Weekend.
As well as the show, attendees are assured of a tasty casserole dinner.
Thornton admitted he was looking forward to performing in his old hometown.
“Having been born and bred in Geelong, I am thrilled to be performing a stand-up comedy show back in my old hood of G-troit,” Thornton declared.
“I recommend everyone to book a seat, or a table, for what will be a fun night will all proceeds going to a good cause.
“I can guarantee two things on the night – we’ll all have a laugh, enjoy ourselves and raise money.
“I can also guarantee I’m not good with numbers,” he quipped.
Thornton grew up in Geelong, attended Belmont High and studied at Gordon Institute, forever marking him as a Cats country original.
Known for his honest, engaging and whip-smart comedy, Thornton is well known for his Fox FM breakfast show, his many TV appearances and live gigs.
The Comedy and Casseroles night has been organised by Our Women Our Children, an organisation that fundraises for women and children’s services at Barwon Health.
Volunteers president Monique Holmes-Richardson said the group was thrilled to Thornton headline the event.
“Having Dave at our event is a wonderful opportunity for our group to promote the work we do within the Geelong community, keeping our fundraising money local.”
Richardson said the group ran events and activities year round to provide equipment and services within a nominated area of the health service.
In the past the group have supported the Emergency Department, the McKellar Centre and Children’s Ward.
Giving Weekend will be held on 17 and 18 June and accepts donations and volunteer time for #ProjectLove to fund the redevelopment of the Andrew Love Cancer Centre.
“Each year 2400 people in the region are diagnosed with cancer so the redevelopment of the chemotherapy day ward and oncology pharmacy is desperately needed to keep up with the demand on services,” Richardson said.
Comedy and Casseroles is on 18 June at 7pm at the Ukranian Hall, Pakington St, Geelong West. Tickets are $50 and include show and casserole dinner. For tickets contact Barwon Health Foundation on 4215 8900.
