Art after dark to shine bright

By NOEL MURPHY

GEELONG is set to stage a striking array of music, colour, dance and art events tonight.
The City Hall-sponsored Geelong After Dark fest will feature pop-up performances, art installations and happenings through the heart of the city.
The program includes an alpaca procession, musical acts, a virtual Antarctica, dance pop-ups, an Afghan tea house, opera, travelling suitcases of art, a tuba quartet, soundscapes and giant puppets.
Culture vultures will also find a silent disco, underground performances, shadow puppets, Little Shop of Horris interactive art, light projections, pop up choirs, rooftop cinema, drumming and theatre.
And it’s all free.
Mayor Darryn Lyons has been pumping the event, the second such affair, describing it as one not to miss.
“I absolutely love what it brings to the heart of Geelong,” he said.
“Creative, colourful and spontaneous performances – it’s art for everyone and is a great night out.”
“It’s a night for exploring central Geelong, as ordinary spaces by day transform at night into something exciting, unexpected and very much alive.”
The initial Geelong After Dark, last year, drew some 6000. It’s considered a showcase of local artistic talent — short, sharp and edgy art with surprises at every turn.
The festival will run from 6 to 10pm at various sites through the city.
