Norlane’s Margaret van Berendonk knows it takes more than good looks to win a place at Geelong All Breeds Cat Club’s annual championship show.
“You need to ensure your cats are clean and well-maintained,” the Persian breeder told the Independent.
“All your cats have to be bathed and groomed regularly, not just the day before the competition.
“It can take months to prepare for an event like this.”
More than 200 cats and kittens will be on display next week at the club’s 23rd annual show.
Among the exotic felines will be Ms van Berendonk’s four short-haired Persians.
She said her prized pets would be competing in group one this year, a section open to a range of Persian and “rag doll” cats.
“In this section cats are judged on their head type, eye shape and colour, boning, colour and the texture of their coat,” she said.
The show would also feature a variety of Siamese, Oriental and domestic cats, she said.
Ms van Berendonk expected the competition to be a catfight.
“Every year it’s pretty fierce,” she said.
“There are so many great cats out there.”
Geelong All Breeds Cat Club will run its championship show at Vines Road Community Centre on May 17.
