Facebook site targets evil Geelong rapist thousands vent fury

Community anger at a reduced prison sentence for a violent Corio rapist has prompted more than 4500 members to join a Facebook group.
After one week in cyberspace 4600 members had joined the group, named ‘Luke Gill behind bars for life’, posting hundreds of comments calling for the attacker to “rot in jail”.
Last week the 30-year-old rapist had his penalty for robbery charges related to the rape revised from six years down to two for stealing $110 from his 22-year-old victim’s purse.
Gill, who did not appear in court, had his jail time sliced from 19 to 17 years with a 13-year non-parole period.
The court rejected a Crown prosecution appeal to increase the rape sentence to between 18 and 20 years. Gill’s 16-year sentence for raping the university student on Little Malop Street in December, 2006, was left unchanged.
Members of the social networking site slammed the reduced prison sentence, labelling the court’s decision “too lenient”.
“There should be no remorse for this monster,” one member posted.
“I am disgusted the law chooses to protect these types of people – what about the victims?
“The justice system is an absolute joke at times. How are we meant to protect our children?”
The group’s creator said the site was designed for people to “get together, make a difference and stand up for what we believe and that is for rapists to endure their full sentence, especially Luke Gill”.
“If you do the crime you should serve the full sentence with no parole crap – it’s stupid,” the creator posted.
“If the judicial system thought deeper into things and got a public look on it, they would see what they have to do – number one, no parole, number two, serve full sentences and number three, no witness protection.”
Crime Victims Support Association’s Noel McNamara said the overwhelming support for Geelong’s victims of crime was “not surprising”.
“The sentences are completely out of hand and they don’t meet community standards,” Mr McNamara said.
