City Hall set to light up for Xmas

Geelong’s City Hall is set to lit up like a Christmas tree this festive season.
Artists Nick Azidis and Amanda Morgan will transform the Gheringhap St offices with nightly Christmas-themed light projections from 29 November to 28 December.
The display will be part of a series of Christmas lights and decorations initiatives to brighten up the city centre over the festive season.
Mayor Darryn Lyons said Azidis “knocked back the Rolling Stones’ projection contract” for Saturday night’s Hanging Rock concert because of his commitment to the Geelong program.
The animated projections would explore a “vast array of contemporary and traditional Christmas iconography across both northern and southern hemispheres”, Cr Lyons said.
Features would include highly colourful festive abstract treatments, stained-glass windows, a gingerbread house and ice crystals.
Animation sequences would include fall snow, plants growing across City Hall’s facade and transform the building into a “giant night-time fireplace”.
“Nick and Amanda have come up with an impressive light display specifically created for City Hall,” Cr Lyons said.
“This is the first time Geelong has had lighting projections of this scale and I can’t wait for people to see what we’ve got in store.”
“I’m really excited to give Geelong a Christmas that we can all be proud of this year.”
“Nick has projected light displays onto the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons for World AIDS day.”
Cr Lyons said Azidi had also worked for events including Melbourne’s White Night Festival, Australian Open Tennis and the Bruce Springsteen and Rod Stewart concert at Hanging Rock.
