Youth activities area opens on city waterfront

Andrew Mathieson
GEELONG’S idyllic waterfront has been transformed into a hive of skateboarders, live musical acts and half-court basketball games.
A new $1.8 million youth activities area will open on the waterfront today as a dedicated space to lure the region’s 40,000 youths.
Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood said craft markets and art exhibitions to cater for more tranquil interests also feature in City of Greater Geelong and State Government plans for the activities precinct.
“The area was designed to be both attractive and multi-functional, so that it could easily be used for many different activities and events,” Cr Harwood said.
“There was a great deal of community consultation throughout the development process, so we’re confident the new area will cater successfully to the recreational needs of our youth.
“We trust that having an area built primarily for their own activities and events will help our young people to feel more connected and instrumental in the Geelong community.”
The City has tipped $880,000 into the project.
The City said the activities precinct still had minor works for completion despite today’s official opening.
A community open day scheduled for December 7 at the facility will include free entertainment and other activities.
