Wolf Reece Mastin to prowl Geelong

By Emily Iannello

TEEN star Reece Mastin is set to prowl Geelong on his Wolf in the Woods tour this month.
Mastin said he would be in town with a new band to play songs off his forthcoming second album.
The 19-year-old Australian won TV’s X-Factor in 2011 before his debut album hit number one on the ARIA chart with three singles in the top five.
Mastin told the Independent he was on a “new direction” with the new, as-yet-unnamed album.
“That’s why we set up the tour – it’s a preview and a glimpse of what’s to come.”
The new album was a departure from Mastin’s pop foundations, he said, featuring songs he wrote himself and “a lot more use of real instruments”.
“It’s definitely a lot more rock but it’s also more organic, which is what I’ve been trying to do over the last couple of years.
“It’s cool to do something a little bit different.”
Mastin was excited about performing the “new stuff”.
“The last tour had a lot of cool elements going on but this one’s a lot more stripped back. It’ll definitely be fun to see how far we can take it.
“It’s going to be an awesome night. There’s going to be some really cool musicians down there.
“I can’t wait to get out there and play.”
Mastin said he would also perform songs from his previous album.
“We have a new band, so it’s all going to be a little bit different but we’ll definitely be doing the older songs as well.”
Mastin wanted to “get the whole album definite” before choosing the title but said his song Wolf in the Woods inspired the tour name.
“It’s a song I’ve been working on for a while and then it slowly turned into the tour name.”
Mastin’s support act will be New York-based The Kin, which recently toured Australia and the US with Pink.
“They did the MAX sessions with Coldplay recently, so I went and checked that out and they sound awesome,” Mastin enthused.
“They’re a really cool band. I can’t wait to start touring with them.”
Mastin plays Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 18 September.
