TORQUAY police and emergency services officers have unveiled a smashed car display in a bid to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding.
Torquay SES operations controller John Symington said the crash car provided “high-impact imagery”.
The display would be particularly useful to teach young drivers about road safety, he said.
“It’s important for people about to get their learner’s permit or licence to see the result of an accident involving speeding,” Mr Symington said.
Torquay Police Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara said the purple utility vehicle used in the display came from a Gippsland crash involving a man in his 20s who was speeding.
The display would remain on the Surf Coast for five years but he would search for a “suitable” vehicle from a western region accident as a replacement, Sen Sgt Ferrara said.
“The display’s powerful regardless of where the car comes from but it’s a lot more personal when it involves a local person,” he said.
