THE RUBENS defied the music industry tradition of bands paying their dues when Grammy-award-winning producer David Kahne pledged to work with the budding quarter.
Lead singer Sam Margin told the Independent he and his brothers, Elliott and Zaac, and friend Scott were “stoked” to record their debut album alongside Kahne in New York.
“To have such a big producer and live there for three months to record is about as exciting as it gets for a new band,” Margin said.
Melbourne band, formed in 2011, and caught Kahne’s interest with home-recorded single My Gun.
Margin found the success bewildering.

“I can’t remember when we started officially. I think we might’ve mentioned it once as a joke.”
Margin said The Rubens were ready to “rock out and have fun” at Bended Elbow next week as part of a national tour.
The band had benefited from a “steep learning curve” on previous tours supporting Lanie Lane and playing festivals like Splendour in the Grass, he said.
“Our tour is going to be a good one all ’round. We’ve got great supports.
“It’ll be our biggest tour and we’re so lucky to have the opportunity.”
