Wheely big cost revs up US sites

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

A US $30,000 price tag on Geelong-made carbon fibre wheels for Ford’s new Shelby Mustang is fueling American rev-head websites.
A Mustang6G forum member posted an invoice revealing the cost after ordering the optional carbon fibre wheels for the Shelby GT350R.
The Independent reported last month that Waurn Ponds-based Carbon Revolution was making the wheels for its first mass-production contract.
Websites said a stock Shelby GT350R Mustang was expected be priced from US $61,370, so upgrading to carbon fibre wheels would increase the price aound 50 per cent more. The websites speculated that few buyers would pay so much.
A Ford spokesman denied the $30,000 price tag on one of the websites.
“If the car is $60-some-thousand, how could the wheels possibly be 30K?” the spokesman asked.
But he did not reveal the actual cost of the wheels.
Because the wheels are customised for the Shelby, Ford says they would not work properly on another car without further changes.
“So rest assured, replacement wheels won’t cost you $30K, though we’d assume insurance would probably cover damage or theft anyway,” autoweek.com said.
“On the bright side, Carbon Revolution has one set of wheels on the market and more are surely on their way. The trick, apparently, is getting our cars ready.”
