TAC to ‘lead world’ from Geelong HQ

The Transport Accident Commission has unveiled a “bold new plan” to lead the world in social insurance from its Geelong headquarters.
The strategy would restore Victoria’s status as the global leader in road safety while providing world-leading care for people hurt on the roads, said TAC chief Joe Calafiore.
Reduced road trauma and improved client outcomes would be measures of success for the TAC 2020 strategy, he said.
“It’s about putting the highest possible value on human life and saying we must do everything we can to keep Victorians safe and help those hurt on the roads to get their lives back on track.”
The TAC will benchmark itself against comparable social insurance schemes around the world as part of the strategy. Social insurers are responsible for preventing injuries, compensating people for injury-related losses and assisting with their rehabilitation.
The strategy would include a “digital transformation” for faster, easier claims processes for people hurt in transport accidents, the TAC said.
The agency would also work to strengthen relationships with the health sector and was already working with trauma hospitals and Ambulance Victoria on initiatives to help clients recover.
“TAC 2020 is an ambitious strategy but Victorians don’t deserve second best, especially when it comes to their safety and their recovery after an accident,” Mr Calafiore said.
TAC 2020’s success would also be assessed on client-focused health measures including return-to-work rates and the extent to which clients could achieve lifestyle objectives.
“Victorians have high expectations of the TAC and it’s because of our people that I’m confident that we will deliver for the community,” Mr Calafiore said.
