Walking soccer players kick their heels up

GEELONG has been chosen as a test venue for a sport that is attracting growing support across the United Kingdom.
Walking Soccer, a modified version of the game is coming to Geelong next month, with local clubs encouraged to lead the way and sign up players who have walked away from the game through age or injury.
Melanie Thomas, from Leisure Networks, however, is hoping the pedestrian game will attract more than former players.
“It’s a concept that provides opportunities for men over 50 who have never played the game before. We’ve had some positive feedback and funding from VicHealth which has allowed for a trial program in Geelong,” she said.
“The key difference in the rules from the regular game is that if a player runs it’s a free-kick to the other team, this restriction, together with a ban on slide tackles, promotes cardiovascular fitness whilst reducing stress on the body and avoiding injuries,” she added.
Game length can vary, dependent on fitness levels and the number of players.
“We also see it as a great social outlet, where people can get together after the game and chat about the match and life in general,” Ms Thomas said.
Down the track, organisers also aim to tap into the growing number of females playing soccer and are hoping to attract mothers and daughters to the game.
“It’s been hugely successful in the United Kingdom and we see no reason why it should not kick on here,” she said.
Matches will be played at the Anakie Road Leisure time Centre on Wednesday mornings from 10am-11am and from 7pm until 8pm in the evenings. Costs have been capped at $4 for each player.
