POLICE are preparing a major blitz on crime on the Bellarine Peninsula this summer, according to the area’s top cop
Acting Senior Sergeant David Magher, said police would conduct a series of crackdowns.
“We’ll target everything from the illegal drug trade and opportunistic street crime to road safety violations.
“The incidence of crime spikes during summer because of the large influx of holiday makers. Many are in full party mode, they drink too much and take drugs, often they’re out of control.”
Acting Sen Sgt Magher said his troops would be out in force on the highways, beaches and shopping precincts.
“A large number of uniformed, plain clothes and undercover police in marked and unmarked cars will be swung into action. Every available member will be involved and all police leave will be cancelled for the duration of the anti crime operations.”
Acting Sen Sgt Magher said the illicit drug trade was high on the police hit list.
“The peddlers and pushers of illegal drugs are firmly in our sights, so too is a wide variety of street crime like car break-ins and thefts from shops and shoppers.
“The number of foot patrols on beaches and in retail centres will be ramped up.”
