Spring bid ‘bubbling’

Authorities should reopen “bubbling” mineral springs at Clifton Springs, according to a foreshore committee member.
Clifton Springs foreshore sub-committee’s Bernard Filbay called for the reopening as City of Greater Geelong prepared to receive an archaeologist’s report on the springs’ heritage values.
Mr Filbay said the site of the mineral springs at the Dell beach was one of the most important heritage areas in Victoria.
“Clifton Springs was considered the place to come for better health,” he said.
“The name says it all – it’s where everyone came during the 1800s and early 1900s.
“The mineral springs are still bubbling down there and we’d like to see them reopened.”
Ward councillor Tom O’Connor said the Dell held enough historic artefacts to warrant a preservation program including interpretative displays.
“The area was renowned for its saltwater baths and mineral springs,” he said.
“This is part of history and it’s so important we maintain our links with yesteryear.”
Cr O’Connor said a coastal management plan that prompted the investigation of the mineral springs could also include a “possibility” of a reopening.
However, high costs meant reopening the springs was “a long way off”, he warned.
CR O’Connor said private investors could fund the project.
The City commissioned archaeologist Roger Luebbers to run the mineral springs heritage study last year.
Cr O’Connor said Mr Luebber’s report had been due this week but was yet to arrive.
Council would put the report on display for public comment.
Cr O’Connor said residents would be able to compare old documents and photographs of the Dell to the archaeologist’s assessment.
