Cats aim to finish on positive

WHILE Geelong Cricket Club fought bravely to win the first innings of last week’s match against Ringwood, it was unable to sustain the pressure, eventually going down on the second innings to lose outright.
Justin McPhee put in a solid performance for 6/30 to help claim an 11-run first innings lead, while Tom Treble was the only batsman to stand up in the second innings with a well-compiled half century.
But Ringwood proved too strong, cruising to its target of 155 in just 29 overs.
Tomorrow Geelong begins its final home game of the season against Northcote.
The Cats will be keen to do well so they can finish the season with some positives.
In Geelong Cricket Association, St Joseph will have its destiny in its own hands in division one when it attempts to chase down Newtown & Chilwell’s 204 at the College Oval.
If Joeys wants to stay in the hunt for finals and the chance to defend last year’s flag, the likes of Leigh Kentish, Andrew Hogdson and Justin Foss will need to show their class and experience to ensure this crucial match isn’t lost.
In division two, seventh placed Newcomb & District has posted a competitive total of 196 in its game against Guild St Mary’s and will be desperate to defend that tomorrow to keep its finals hopes alive.
Andrew Webb top-scored with 58, while Anthony Quarrell did his bit with 43 at the top of the order.
Clinton Ford will look for early wickets tomorrow to avoid any nervous moments.
And in division three, Little River will find itself in the middle of a tricky little run chase when it resumes at 2/21 in pursuit of Corio’s 133.
For the Redbacks, Troy Smith took career-best figures of 7/22 last week but will be hoping his batsman can return the favour tomorrow or their season could well be over.
