A Geelong yoga instructor plans to demonstrate the calming affects of meditation to raise awareness of the ongoing battle against depression.
Donations from Charlotte Fraser’s mass yoga classes at Eastern Beach from tomorrow will raise money for national depression initiative Beyond Blue.
Ms Fraser, who grew up around family members battling the debilitating illness, believed yoga could help sufferers “get their minds back on track”.
“It’s been quite a big part of my life, not that I have had diagnosed depression but yoga has definitely helped my own mental health and helped me cope with work and stress.”
Recent statistics from Australian Sports Commission showed that yoga was more popular as a physical activity among Australians than footy, Ms Fraser said.
She asked anyone attending the sessions to bring a mat or towel and a light blanket to the free first class on the grass to the right of Eastern Beach’s historic fountain tomorrow from 9am to 10am.
