UCI works lagging

Kim Waters
GEELONG’S council has failed to uphold its promise to restore roads altered for the UCI world cycling championships before Christmas, according to a council spokesperson.
City of Greater Geelong’s Gary Van Driel said contractors were still making “a number of improvements” to a Highton section of the course.
He said contactors would not complete works to an altered roundabout at the intersection of Challambra Crescent and Montpellier Drive for a “few weeks”.
Mr Van Driel told the Independent in November that botched restoration works had delayed the UCI clean up but promised contractors had a Christmas deadline for “all” road restoration works.
He did not set a deadline for landscaping works to return the Queens Park bridge area to its former condition.
“Restoration work carried out by contractors at a number of points around the course (was) found to be below the required standard and the contractors had been directed to do the works again at their own expense,” he said.
Mr Van Driel said landscaping works on a new car park at Queens Park were “nearing completion”.
He said contactors would use salvaged soil from works on the temporary UCI bridge for the construction of the car park.
