All clear for colourful outfit

Erin Pearson
COMPARING themselves to the likes of cartoon superhero Captain Planet, Geelong band The Colour Clear think their fusion of talent is a winner.
Guitarist and vocalist Matt Biscombe said after six months of “bonding” the group had found the secret to their success.
“We were all playing in different bands and decided it was time we started something we all enjoyed,” he said.
“Playing in other bands over the years has given us the experience that bands need to be diverse, everyone gets a say and this understanding makes the band’s process much easier.”
Biscombe, who picked up a guitar just four years ago to help him though high school, admitted fellow band members Nick Hagger, Adrian Trinchera and Luke Chapman were an “eclectic” mix.
“I study tourism, Nick is a nurse, Adrian works at a bank and Chappy is a painter,” he laughed.
“Nick rocks up to band practice in nursing gear, Chappy’s all covered in paint, it’s all over the shop.
“We don’t expect to be playing in L.A. next week.”
The Colour Clear’s first gig late last year at Geelong’s Bended Elbow broke the all-time ticket sales record for a local artist at the venue.
But the bands’ beginning wasn’t always so simple.
Biscombe said the foursome deliberated for “months” over their final name.
“We had been struggling to find a name for so long and one night Nick called us from a pub he was at with an idea,” he said.
“Nick said we should call ourselves Stairwell Clear after he saw a pub sign that read ‘keep the stairwell clear’.
“We thought it was the worst name ever but it eventually evolved into The Colour Clear and just stuck.”
Biscombe said the band’s “radio friendly rock” could be heard when the four released their debut self-titled EP next week.
“We’re a cross between Powderfinger and John Butler,” he said. “People should look out for songs Dance Floor Warfare and Outside In.”
The Colour Clear will perform at Beaves Bar on January 13.
