Surf Coast councillor Dean Webster is set for another term as mayor.
Cr Webster said he would nominate after winning the most votes at last week’s council election.
“I declared in front of my fellow councillors that I would stand again for mayor,” he said.
Cr Webster nominated development of the shire’s civic centre precinct and its sport grounds as a priority for the new council.
“Our population is expected to double and we need to ensure there are adequate recreational facilities,” Cr Webster said.
“I will also continue working on securing a public transport link throughout the whole shire, address climate change…and look at housing affordability.
Re-elected councillor Lindsay Schroeter said he would support a re-elected colleague as mayor.
“I wouldn’t vote for any of the new councillors because they haven’t got the experience,” Cr Schroeter said.
“We’ve made that mistake before.”
Councillors will elect the new mayor on Tuesday.
Crs Webster and Schroeter have joined former mayors Libby Mears and Rose Hodge, veteran councillor Jim Tutt and newcomers Libby Coker, Brian McKiterick, Simon Northeast and Joe Remenyi on council.
