Miette steps up for child research

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

EVENT management could be a future career for 11-year-old Miette Craven-Briggs.
The grade five St Patrick’s Primary student motivated 84 schoolmates to step out during lunchtimes this week to raise funds for Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.
After seeking permission from vice-principal Jan Fagan, Miette organised online registrations, newsletter publicity, sponsorships and even fronted assembly to spruik the event.
Miette arranged a team of students to skip, dance and run their way through 10,000 steps a day, measuring their progress with pedometers.
“It was just been amazing the way Miette motivated the school to take it on board,” Ms Fagan said.
“Our input consisted of saying, ‘That’s a great idea’, and she organised the rest, getting the kids to give up their lunchtimes.”
Miette said came up with the idea after seeing TV advertisements for the institute.
“I thought it would be a good thing to do.
“It’s just kids helping kids and raising money for them. I have asthma and I thought it might help with that.
“I got my three friends to help me but they were happy to help, it’s fun to do and a good idea to help others.”
Miette said she was surprised to have already hit her fund-raising target of $100.
