State talks on ‘library cash’

STATE Government is “working on a solution” to shortfalls in library funding, according to a spokesperson.
The spokesperson for Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said an announcement “was expected this week”.
“The minister and Premier are aware of library funding issues and are currently working toward a solution,” he said.
The Independent revealed last month that the region’s libraries faced funding cuts under the Baillieu Government.
The government spokesperson revealed the bid for a solution after South Barwon MP Andrew Katos broke ranks with the Government, asking it to reinstate Geelong’s $69,000 in library funding cuts.
Mr Katos wrote to Ms Powell on behalf of City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire and “a number of constituents”.
In the letter obtained by the Independent, Mr Katos blamed the cuts on the previous Labor government.
“I write to make representations in relation to library funding and the consequences of cuts and savings made by the previous state government,” Mr Katos wrote.
“It is of (sic) my understanding that the Geelong Regional Library Corporation budgeted for improved services.
“The changes made have effectively resulted in a $69,000 cut to the GRLC.”
Municipal Association of Victoria president councillor Bill Arthur said Mr Katos’s letter suggested a Save Our Libraries campaign had influenced coalition backbenchers.
“It’s interesting that one backbencher has sent letter like that,” Cr McArthur said.
“The minister has agreed that we need a better funding model. I’m hopeful of a great outcome,” he said.
