Torquay father Stephen Hayden has died in a two-car crash on New Zealand’s South Island on Monday afternoon.
The crash occurred on State Highway 8 between Hayman Road and Tekapo Canal Road, just after 5.15pm local time, killing two people, a New Zealand Police spokesperson said.
Police had notified the 46-year-old’s family, the spokesperson said.
“Police are now in a position to name the two people who died following a crash on SH8, near Lake Tekapo on Monday evening.”
The crash also killed 72-year-old Nigel Stuart Freeman, from the New Zealand town of Twizel.
New Zealand Police temporarily closed the road and their Serious Crash Unit was conducting an investigation. Police urged witnesses of the crash or anyone who saw a silver 2017 Toyota Highlander travelling north on State Highway 8 prior to the crash to contact them.
The police spokesperson was unable to provide any further detail as the crash was under investigation.
“Police’s thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Hayden and Mr Freeman,” the spokesperson said.
