Young pianist shines in Star Search quest

STAR SEARCH WINNERS: Jye Cannon and Kelvin Liu.

STAR SEARCH, the region’s premier talent quest for young musicians, has been taken out by a young  pianist barely into his teens.
Highton’s Kelvin Liu won the instrument category at Star Search before judges also handed him the overall winner’s award.
A spokesperson said the 14-year-old demonstrated “amazing talent at the keyboard”.
The night’s other big winner was Breakwater 16-year-old Jye Cannon, who won the vocal category.
Liu won $1300 in prize money for his two titles, while Cannon took home $1000.
A field of 14 entrants competed in front of a capacity audience at Sacred Heart College’s McAuley Hall last Friday night.
The entrants played as solos and groups, covering a variety of musical styles.
Rotary Club of Highton stages Star Search each year as a performance opportunity for the region’s emerging musical talent.
