Anglers get fresh fishing on trout, reddies

Freshwater fishing dominated local angling action over the past week.
Steve Prior drifted out mudeye under a float at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir on Saturday morning, catching a rainbow trout of 1.5kg.
Other anglers fishing the reservoir caught redfin from 800g to 1.5kg on Fish Arrow soft plastics among the weed beds.
Lake Wendouree produced rainbow trout on Powerbait. Plenty of fish were around 1.5kg, with bait working better than lures.
Roy Cusani headed out of town to Howqua Inlet where he found near-perfect conditions. He trolled Strike Pro Bob N Spoons, soon catching an outstanding yellowbelly of 5kg.
Adam Van Der Lught ventured to Lake Eucembene in search of monster brown trout preparing for their annual spawning run. He caught numerous large fish early on a glow-bug pattern fly before changing to nymphs and hard body lures to land numerous trout averaging 3kg.
Lake Bullen Merri again produced Chinook salmon to 1.5kg at first light on bluebait fished deep or trolled Daiwa Double Clutch lures.
Jason Lane and Duane Tribe fished next door at Lake Purrumbete where they soon boated a nicely coloured brown trout of 1.5kg on a deep-diving lure. Jason caught two browns, five Chinook salmon and three redfin for the day, while Duane landed a 1.5kg trout on mudeye fished among the weed beds.
The Barwon River estuary was a standout for saltwater angling.
Hugh Robinson and son Max, 4, had no trouble landing small Australian Salmon. They also caught a 30cm tailor, which young Max took home for a feed.
Squid and whiting were caught in reasonable numbers off St Leonards, particularly just out from the boat ramp near the extensive weed beds.
Surf anglers caught salmon and gummy sharks on beaches such as Jan Juc. Bluebait and pilchard fillets did all the damage.
Anglers casting small 25g lures in pilchard colours caught salmon to 2kg.
Apollo Bay hosted large schools of 10kg to 30kg southern bluefin tuna feeding on the surface. The fish were finicky but casting 40g to 60g metal lures temped some.
Anyone in search of a barrel should consider Apollo Bay, which has produced tuna over 100kg recently.
