GEELONG’S police chief warned grand final revellers that anti-social behaviour would not be tolerated.
Superintendent Andrew Allen said police would launch a massive operation in Geelong tomorrow to keep a watchful eye on celebrations at Skilled Stadium and the city centre and on drink driving.
The operation would involve foot patrols, brawler vans, the mounted police and police dog squad and a mobile police station set up at the corner of Moorabool and Little Malop streets, he said.
“Obviously this is an extremely exciting time for Geelong,” Supt Allen
“The city has waited a long time for the Cats to be in another grand final and we do understand that it will be a real cause for celebration if they bring home the premiership cup.
“We want people to have a fun, trouble-free time but anyone that does cross the line will be dealt with accordingly,” he warned.
“We will be heavily focusing on alcohol related and anti-social behaviour and will not be tolerating any unruly behaviour.”
Supt Allen said police would be placed strategically across the city.
The operation starts at Skilled Stadium, where police will perform crowd control duties for an expected 15,000 people watching the grand final on a super screen.
A grand final party will also be held in a section of the stadium until midnight where alcohol will be served.
“Police will be closely monitoring alcohol consumption during the day and working to ensure a smooth and safe flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic from the venue,” Supt Allen said.
He said police attention would move to the city centre after the game, while transit police and other uniformed officers would travel on trains returning from the MCG.
Drink driving would also be a key focus, with police heavily targeting arterial roads commonly used by alcohol-affected people to avoid police.
But Geelong Superintendent Andrew Allen warned that police would be constantly changing their location and tactics during the operation to make it more difficult for motorists to avoid detection.
