Lifesavers to hit the streets of Torquay

Alex de Vos
TORQUAY Surf Lifesaving Club will hit the streets tomorrow on its annual door knock.
Club spokesman Kelvin Benson said about 120 members, families and friends were expected to pound the pavements of Torquay to raise $10,000.
“We’ll meet at about 4.30pm and everyone will be given a slice of territory to cover,” Mr Benson said.
“Caravan parks will be covered as well.”
Mr Benson said the annual surf lifesaving door knock had been going on “forever”.
“Last year we raised over $7000 and this year we’re aiming for $10,000,” he said.
Mr Benson said the funds were needed each year to keep the club running.
“We need the money to buy equipment, for maintenance and rescue,” he said.
Mr Benson said this year’s annual door knock was a “timely” event.
“We’ve already had a number of rescues since the start of December,” he said.
“We need to keep raising the awareness of water safety.”
Mr Benson urged beachgoers to be “sun-smart” this summer and not swim while intoxicated.
“If you don’t know anything else at least swim between the flags.”
