Classic Jason ti get heavy at Star Search

Independent News
Highton’s Jason Coris began learning classical guitar at the tender age of six.
But around his teens he discovered heavy metal.
Faced with the dilemma of choosing between his favourite styles, Jason took the logical option.
He started playing classical heavy metal.
Now 17 and aiming for a career in music, Jason will call on all his skills in the solo instrumental competition at Geelong’s biggest annual talent quest in May.
Jason was a grand finalist at the last Star Search but hopes to win his category this year.
But he’s expecting more competition this time.
“Last time I was lucky because I was the only guitarist in the solo instrumental section,” he admits.
Jason advises other budding musicians to enter Star Search via the competition website.
Entrants enjoy an exciting competition, he says, as well as a boost to their professional profiles.
“Definitely get involved,” Jason urges.
“I remember how much fun it was last time but the publicity you get would have to be the number one thing for me.
“Star Search really gets you well known in the area.”
Previous Star Search winners include top-selling Australian artist Missy Higgins and international opera performer Cheryl Barker.
Star Search competitors will perform for cash prizes in vocal and instrumental sections and solo and group categories.
Auditions begin on April 17 before heats to decide Star Search finalists.
Organiser Rotary Club of Highton hopes to fill Geelong’s 1400-seat Costa Hall for the event on May 11.
Club event spokesperson Peter Mansfield urged Geelong to get behind its premier talent quest.
“Star Search gives young performers a chance to play in front of the biggest possible audience in a world-class venue where the best performers in the region will be rewarded for their abilities,” Mr Mansfield said.
Tickets cost $20 or $15 for concession-card holders. Group bookings of 10 or more are $14 a head.
Proceeds from Star Search will go to local Rotary community projects.
The Independent is a sponsor of Star Search.
