Geelong’s council has joined a growing list of communityminded businesses and organisations signing on to the region’s Buy Local policy.
Buy Local directs participating organisations to source goods and services locally where possible to stop spending money leaving the region, estimated at $1.2 million a day.
Mayor Bruce Harwood called on other businesses and organisations to follow City Hall’s example.
“We’re looking to be part of retail and community development, so we want to encourage people to look for goods and services in their own region before they look elsewhere,” Cr Harwood said.
“The City’s economic development unit has been proactive in helping drive this campaign and the Buy Local message will resonate through the entire council.”
Buy Local organiser Digby Hughes, of Geelong Business Network, said nearly 150 local organisations had joined the campaign so far.
