Widely adored children’s television program Play School is on its way to Geelong with special national concert Humpty’s Showtime as part of the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
The second longest-running children’s TV show in the English-speaking world, Play School entertains more than 100,000 Australian kids every year with its national concert tour.
Presenter Alex Papps, who has starred on the show for just over 10 years, puts Play School’s success down to its “simplicity”.
“It encourages kids to use their imagination, make their own fun and that it’s possible to do that within their own home,” Papps said.
He described the 40-minute performance as a “very faithful representation of what they’ve come to love on TV”.
“There are lots of opportunities for audience participation and space to dance around to the songs.
“I find so much joy in seeing how excited the kids get when they see their favourite Play School toys on stage. And the parents have a great time too.
“I think Play School shows are a great way to introduce your kids to live performance.”
The stage show features all the program’s favourite characters, including Humpty, Jemima, Big Ted and Little Ted.
Two of the on-screen presenters attend to narrate each performance.
As with the television program, the audience enjoys dancing along to songs, as well as quiet times to watch and listen.
Play School fans will know familiar songs such as I’m a Little Teapot and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Humpty’s Showtime Geelong will be at South Barwon Civic Centre on 16 February.
