Mystery and music blend for Corby release

By Jena-Maree Marino
MYSTERIOUS Geelong singer/songwriter Charles Corby is determined to grab attention with his debut single.
But the song is still without a title and, like the rest of his music, kept under wraps as Corby builds intrigue ahead of the launch.
None of the 20-year-old’s music is available online, nor has Corby performed any in the public domain.
The classically-trained vocalist is taking a different route to most artists, refusing to reveal any of his work until it’s note-perfect.
The mystery surrounding Corby and his music is the key to his plan for stardom.
“I don’t really care [how] everyone else is doing it, I do what’s most innate to me,” he explains.
Corby describes the forthcoming debut single as a self-indulgent ballad featuring his raw, beefy vocals and grand piano.
The song is one of 100 originals he claims to have penned.
Despite his low profile, Corby already has a link to fame – a cousin is singer/songwriter Matt Corby, two-time ARIA Song of the
Year winner for Brother in 2012 and Resolution in 2013.
“I’m proud of him,” Corby says, “but I wouldn’t use him for publicity.”
Corby grew up in Buckley, a small farming district 20 minutes’ drive west of Geelong.
Music surrounded his life as he completed secondary studies at Kardinia International
College, Bell Post Hill.
He participated in numerous school performances and specialised in voice for his VCE Music Performance studies.
He also played The Empire Grill restaurant as a piano student at Minuet Music Studios.
The restaurant gigs demonstrated Corby’s will to rely on his own talent.
“I’d always just end up writing material on the day or the day before because I was too stubborn to play covers,” he admits.
Corby plans to travel to Barcelona for a promotional photo shoot with high-profile photographer Andrew Guilliaume, who has
worked on events such as Melbourne Fashion Week.
With modeling studies also part of his portfolio, Corby will be ready-made talent for his own shoot.
