MIFF’s on way to Geelong

By EMILY IANNELLO

MELBOURNE International Film Festival (MIFF) will bring four sell-out films to Geelong.
The event’s Travelling Film Festival series will visit Geelong and four other regional centres with weekend programs showcasing Australian and international highlights from this year’s Melbourne line-up.
Geelong Performing Arts Centre will screen Putuparri and the Rainmaker, Song of the Sea, Results and Neon from 11 to 12 September.
Festival artistic director Michelle Carey said selecting the four films from the 300 titles showing in Melbourne was a “difficult choice”.
“We want films that are going to connect with audiences,” she said.
“The four films represent different genres. We know everyone has different taste so we love to put on all sorts of films.”
Carey described Putuparri and the Rainmakers as a story of love, hope and survival, based on Tom ‘Putuparri’ Lawford’s struggle to reconnect with his ancestral lands and culture.
“Putuparri has been very popular – it’s in the top three documentaries. It’s also just won the CinefestOZ film competition.”
Carey said MIFF most popular film winner, Song of the Sea, was a visually enchanting animation directed by academy award nominee Tomm Moore.
“It’s geared toward families. It’s so beautiful looking on the big screen -it won an audience award, too.”
Carey said the two other films were an American romantic comedy and a documentary on architecture and the built environment.
“We think all four films are very acceptable and we’re very proud to be putting these out there. We really think they should all be seen on the big screen.”
