Magpies begin swoops across city

By PAUL MILLAR

SWOOPING magpies defending nests are causing problems at Wallington, Moolap, Mt Duneed, Wandana Heights and central Geelong, according to website Magpiealert.com.
Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning said the magpie was among bird species already swooping as part of normal breeding behaviours.
“Even though spring has only just begun, some birds such as plovers and Australian magpies are already protecting their nesting sites by swooping,” said the department’s Mark Braguet.
“People should remember not to harm native birds as they are protected under the Wildlife Act 197.
“If you do end up in an area where there is a swooping bird try to protect your head and eyes and move quickly through the area.
“They’re swooping to defend their eggs and young and if they perceive you to be a potential threat, they may swoop.”
“Report a swooping incident via the Victorian Magpie Map on the DELWP website at delwp.vic.gov.au/swoop so other members of the community know about swooping hotspots.”
