Water storages at 84%

Most of the region received below-average rain in August.
Urban Geelong was the exception, recording around 50mm of rain, which represents 110 per cent of the normal amount.
Rain fell on 13 days, varying from 32.2mm at Avalon to over 60mm at Grovedale South.
Most of the Otways and Moorabool catchment areas received below-average rain but the region’s water storages still finished the month at 84 per cent of capacity.
August temperatures were also very close to normal.
The average minimums were 6C and the maximums were 14.9C, leading to a monthly mean equal to the most-recent 30-year average, 10.5C.
Geelong’s lowest daily minimum was .7C on 3 August. The highest daily maximum was 22.4C on the last day of the month.
Other notable weather features for the month included three frosts in Geelong but an absence of severe storms.
A heavy thunderstorm, complete with much thunder and lightning, was recorded on 23 August, dumping 15mm of rain but without any reports of damage.
The month’s only strong wind gust was recorded on the first day of the month with a reading of 69km/h at Breakwater.
Snow fell in the Otways on 1 August, with Geelong receiving some ail and graupel as the temperature only rose to a maximum of 10.6C for the day.
