Indy’s Tip Star off to Queensland after a ‘fluke’ win

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

A BIT of family fun on a Sunday night has turned into a week-long Queensland holiday for two for the Independent’s winning tip star, Damian Rabbas.
Damian, who owns Cafe¨¦ Lorae with wife Jo, won the Independent’s footy tipping competition with a score of 141, edging out Shell Club’s Karen Wood and Mayor Darryn Lyons, who tied for second with 139.
“We had a bit of fun as a family putting the weekly tips together, although I did have final say,” Damian laughed.
“The kids sometimes came up with some way-out tips, so I’d have to say we fluked it.”
Damian survived a season low point, scoring only four and three in rounds eight and nine, but didn’t look back after that.
“We were watching Karen and Darryn and often their tips would be the same as ours – that’s when it started getting serious.”
Damian is a St Kilda tragic but admitted a “soft spot” for the Cats.
Jo, the face of the cafe, said the win was a complete surprise.
“We’ve never won anything and we’ve never been on holiday together without the kids,” she laughed.
“It might be a new experience for us.”
